There is nothing more embarrassing than trying to make a good impression on a potential customer and then not being able to answer a simple question. It’s not that you don’t have a head full of information… she simply didn’t ask you the right questions! So, here is today’s little bit of trivia.

Rosewater is easily made by using fresh rose petals and distilled water. Siimmer over low heat until the water has been reduced by half and what is left will be the scented water used by our Victorian ancestors. It is often used in beauty products today requiriing the scent of roses.

If you don’t have a library of your own beauty books, by all means start one. I constantly refer to my books and even if they grow old, they will never become useless. And don’t do as I did a couple of years ago… I was vacationing in England, spotted an absolutely ancient book on cosmetic, but didn’t buy it because it was 200 pounds. Do you have any idea how much I think about that book and wonder if it is still in that tiny bookstore? I won’t make that mistake again.

It’s one thing to be trendy when you have a business in this industry, but know when to draw the line. I remember one woman in Avon who actually wore a suit and a hat out each day to drum up new business.

I talked to a lot of other reps and I didn’t find one who didn’t think that she was a little over the top. My best piece of advice… go to the mall and see what the stores are featuring in the windows. Store windows are always a good point of reference. You can either walk straight in and buy the outfit, or spend the day looking for pieces that match.

Simply buying the entire outfit ruined all the fun. I always made a day of it!

I was talking a few day ago about being a makeup artist and I wouldn’t be surprised to find that a few of you have already convinced yourself that you have no chance at being a world famous makeup artist and chances are you won’t be with that attitude! ;)
My bit of advice today is to spend a little time every day learning all about your craft. It could be simply about reading about makeup, or offering free demonstration to your friends. Word gets out fast and there is just no telling where that could lead to. I am a firm believer that word of mouth is an amazing thing!!

You don’t have to live in the major cities to get a job as an extra, but the closer you live, obviously makes it easier for you. I knew of a young woman who lived three hours out of Toronto, but she managed to get her face known to the right people. Don’t forget… the people in charge of extras couldn’t care less where you live as long as you show up when they need you. But, we are getting ahead of ourselves. Lets get your foot in the door first.

First off, you are going to have to know who to contact. Relax, there are lots of books on the topic that list the names of casting directors and agencies. If you watch the newspapers, you will often find agencies requesting new applicants. It’s pretty a case of getting your face in front of the right people.
The next step is to have head shots taken. Those are to be sent off to the agencies mentioned above.

Lots of times, you can learn tricks just by looking at a photo in a fashion magazine. This is especially true of full page ads. Here’s what you do…

Turn the page upside down. It is so much easier to see where the makeup artist concentrated all of her efforts this way. Instead of the entire face as one entity, you suddenly see the cheekbones, the eyes and the brows etc. as individual areas of the face.

Have you ever wondered why you were called in for an interview, but never heard back about the position? Did you do something that the interviewer didn’t like?? What did the person who got the job have that you didn’t??

Quite often it is what you didn’t do that hurt your chances. You didn’t send a thank-you note. To me, it sounds ridiculous that such a little thing should play such importance, but I guess if it is down to two of you in the running, and one sends a note thanking the interviewer for his time and one doesn’t… well, I guess you can see why the employer leaned in one direction.
