makeupA lot of women in the beauty industry work behind a counter in a drug or department store. Have you ever thought about what it looks like from the other side? It makes a difference if you are on commission. Take a quick look.

Here’s what you need for the best results.

1. Adequate space to demonstrate your products. That means no visible fingerprints. For some reason, that really turns me off.

2. Women love testers, so make sure that they are clean and readily available. And if the customer wants to play, let them. There are obvious exceptions to the rules, but sometimes the customer just wants to be left alone. I for one hate a hard sell. Nothing will send me running faster. If I want help, I will ask for it.
And about selling… simply acknowledge the customer and let her know that you are there if she require help. I hate to be ignored too. Yes, I’m probably the customer from hell. ;)

journalRegardless of the industry you are in, if you don’t get along with your clientele, you will not be successful. To some degree this is true. But if you start thinking outside the box, you might discover that your passion can still bring you the success you want.

I’m thinking of someone who loves makeup, but they don’t want to work behind a counter. And they really aren’t that interested in working in a salon doing wedding makeup every Saturday either. So, is there anything left?

I am sitting here looking at my bookshelves. Some of my favorites are about the history of makeup. That stuff just fascinates me. Maybe that’s where your love of makeup could be put to use. What do you think?? Is there a book inside of you??

perfume bottleThere is always going to be people who know more than you do. So, don’t hesitate for a moment to walk up to a beauty counter and ask for advice. There are going to be times when all they want to do is sell you something, but on the other hand, every once in a while they have a bit of gossip to share. I learn a lot of stuff this way!

The Technique of the Professional Make-Up Artist, First Edition

It is probably easier than you ever imagined. There are courses everywhere and then it takes tons and tons of practice. And to get the practice, simply put up a notice in a supermarket bulletin board and you will have all the willing clients you can handle!

And as you are offering your services at this point for free, take advantage of the situation by asking your clients for a little feedback. What colors do they find work best for their particular coloring? It might be a color you never imagined would work!

Creamy Candy Bath Bubble Bar by LUSHI am seeing more and more articles on the subject and if you work in retail, it might be a good idea to know how your company feels about the subject. At the moment, European legistlation is proposing that raw material used in cosmetics be tested on animals. Apparently Lush Fresh Homemade Cosmetics is doing all it can to make people aware that we shouldn’t be going in that direction.

I dug up a list that you can check out. Apparently all of the companies on the list refuse to test their products on animals, but I noticed that there were a few missing. But it is a good place to start.

makeupIt seems that I have been involved in the beauty industry for as long as I can remember. It all started when a friend entered me in my one and only beauty contest. I was Miss Apsley for the year. Lets just say that it was a long, long, long time ago. I was asked to try for two years running, but I wasn’t about to ruin a good thing. What if I lost the title the next year?? Once was enough for me.

I then got married and moved to a tiny town to raise the two babies that would arrive a few years later. During that time I took courses and practiced the art of makeup application on anyone who would let me near them. When you are offering something for free, you get a lot of willing… faces.

Once the children were in school, I started watching the newspaper. Surely there was something in the beauty industry that would take an interest in me?

That is when I spotted an advertisement for an Avon manager. That position came with a few interesting perks… a company car and a salary and my hours were pretty much my own, or so I thought. I was never home. My territory consisted of several small nearby villages and part of my job was to sign up new Avon reps. It was fun, but exhausting.

About the time I was nearly to the burn out stage, I discovered the internet and About.com. I worked as their beauty guide for six years before moving onto B5Media. I love all the freedom that I have with B5. They have allowed me to tackle Aging Fabulous, Her Accessories, Shopaholics Daily.

I’m still at B5Media, but now I am part of the Wurk.com team as well. I will be sharing what I know about the beauty industry, the hair industry as well as staying sane while working at home. I am looking forward to getting to know many of you!!

aromapods“Mood-affecting aromas have been around for centuries. So why hasn’t anyone packaged and sold them?

Luke Vorstermans, a longtime small business advocate and consultant, has been wondering that himself. In fact, he’s done a lot of research on the subject.

“There’s lots of evidence that aromas can affect people’s mood,” Mr. Vorstermans said in an interview at a café near his Hortonville, Kings County, home.

Yet until now, the only way of surrounding yourself with aromas was through candles, oils and packages of scented materials that couldn’t be carried in your purse or pocket. But Mr. Vorstermans believes aromatherapy is about to go mainstream.”

Now this sounds like it has huge possibilities. I agree with Mr. Vorstermans… just don’t know what took so long. A few hundred years ago, people were scenting everything from their hair to their gloves! It seems that we are just catching up!

But I would like to see a little more thought put into the packaging. They remind me of lip balms.
I’m also thinking of a scented insert for your purse will be the next big thing to come! Hint, hint…

If you are in the beauty industry, it’s really important to be up to date on the latest trends/news in your field. It just makes sense. And that includes more than just the latest shades of lipstick. Just for a second, think how busy a doctor must be, but he/she always finds the time to stay up to date with the latest in medicine. I try to keep up by reading the latest in our field as well. It just makes sense to know as much as possible.

So, get in the habit of stopping by on a daily basis and I will point you to some of the interesting little tidbits that I have stumbled upon. Today it’s about what is taking place with Wal-mart. Apparently they are cutting back to save money and that includes some of their beauty lines. So just in case one of your customers mentions that they heard something about Wal-Mart in the news, you will be ready to fill them in !!

Here’s the whole story…
